Only full-time employees of BP Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd are eligible to join BP Medical Aid Society as a principal member.

      • Adoption of a child - copy of the final legal documents
      • Child dependant over 18
        • Student - annual student certificate - (student card not accepted)
        • Unemployed - annual affidavit for family care and support
        • Employed (earning less than R5 000 per month) - annual affidavit for family care and support and income proof (tax return or payslip)
        • Mentally or physically disabled - medical report from the treating doctor/specialist or proof that the child is receiving a disability pension

    In exceptional cases and upon special motivation, other persons may be approved by the Board of Trustees as your dependants.

Membership

  • Terminate membership

    Please inform your Human Resources department. You need submit the instruction in writing and give one calendar month's notice.

    As your membership of the Society is a condition of employment, you are not permitted to terminate your membership while employed by BPSA, unless you are entitled to benefits as a dependant on your spouse or partner's medical scheme. Membership of the Society will automatically cease upon termination of employment with BPSA, unless one of the conditions for eligibility that is applicable to continuation of membership applies.

  • Leave the company but continue membership
    • If you leave the company, you can continue membership in certain situations:
    • You leave the company at 50 years or older (retire or terminate) - your membership will continue automatically,
    • The employer has terminated your service on account of age, ill-health or disability.
    • You have been retrenched at or after the age of 40 where you have enjoyed at least five years of continuous service with the employer at the date of retrenchment and you have to date not found any alternative employment.
    • You resigned or were retrenched from the service of the employer after at least 10 years of continuous service at the time of your termination of service - you may reapply for membership of the Society on reaching the age of 50 with no late joiner penalty if you apply within 12 month's of turning 50.

    As you are no longer an employee, you are required to pay your monthly contributions directly from your bank account. For this you need to provide us with a bank mandate.

  • Family taking over membership from a deceased main member

    The deceased member's membership ceases at the end of the month following the date of death. With effect from the first day of the following month, the surviving spouse or partner becomes the principal member. If there is no spouse or partner, the eldest child assumes the principal membership.

  • Suspended membership

    In the case of failure to pay contributions, the Society will have right to suspend all benefit payments in the respect of claims which arose during the period of default. Written notice of debt will be given to the member/employer, failing which membership may terminated in terms of the rules of the Society.

  • Terminated membership
    Failure to pay contributions

    A membership can be terminated from the Society for not settling a written notice of debt.

    Fraudulent activity
    • The Board of Trustees may exclude benefits or terminate membership of any member or dependant who:
    • Allows someone outside their membership to use their medical aid card
    • Submitting false claims
    • Intentionally hiding or fabricating information
    • Non-disclosure of information
