About joining

Only full-time employees of BP Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd are eligible to join BP Medical Aid Society as principal members.

Membership can be continued by the principal member if he/she leaves the employment of BP Southern Africa in certain situations.

Dependants who are not employed by BP Southern Africa can choose to continue their membership in the case of a deceased principal member.

The medical aid year

Benefit limits are usually allocated in yearly cycles (from 1 January to 31 December).

When a new member joins during the year, the benefits limits will be prorated.

Who can be dependants?

  • group_add Spouse/Partner
    • Married
    • check_circleA certified copy of the marriage certificate
    • Partner
    • A person with whom the member has a committed and serious relationship akin to a marriage based on objective criteria of mutual dependency and a shared and common household, irrespective of the gender of either party.
    • check_circleAffidavit from the main member stating the relationship
  • child_care Member's children
    • for the purposes of determining contributions, child rates apply to:
      check_circlea child under the age of 21 or
      check_circlea child in respect of a member’s child who is:
      • check_circledependent on the member, under the age of 25, and is attending an educational institution; or is mentally or physically disabled and
        check_circleunder the age of 27 years
        check_circlea special dependant ( the parent, child, brother, sister or grandchild of the Member or the Member's spouse or partner, in respect of whom the Member is responsible for family care and support) who is under the age of 21
        check_circlethe immediate niece or nephew of the Member or the Member's spouse or partner, in respect of whom the Member is responsible for family care and supports
      check_circleadult rates will apply in respect of all other dependants.
    • Provided that such dependant is not a member or a registered dependant of a member of another medical scheme.

General waiting periods

  • Prior to joining, if the applicant has not had medical aid coverage for:
  • period of more than 90 days and
  • not had previous continuous coverage for 24 months

General waiting periods may be enforced up to 3 months where claims will not be accepted, except for PMB conditions.

Condition-specific waiting periods

A general waiting period is imposed for three months and a condition-specific waiting period may be imposed for a period of up to nine months for existing pregnancies and confinements and for a period of up to 12 months for any condition for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment was recommended or obtained within a period of 12 months immediately prior to the date on which the application for membership of the Society was made.

If you are already registered on the LifeSense HIV Programme no waiting periods will apply.

Late joiner penalties

The law provides that a late joiner penalty may be imposed on the membership of a member or his or her adult dependants who PLEASE NOTE: If you elect not to register your eligible dependants with the Society on the commencement of employment with the employer, your dependants’ membership will, upon future application for membership, be subject to general and condition-specific waiting periods unless conditions apply under which the waiting periods can be waived. are 35 years of age or older at the date of application and who:

  • did not belong to a registered medical scheme on 1 April 2001; or 
  • belonged to a registered medical scheme on 1 April 2001, but had a break in cover of three or more consecutive months since 1 April 2001. 

The Society will not impose a late joiner penalty on a new member who meets the definition of a late joiner if he or she joins the Society from the date of employment. This concession applies strictly to a member and his or her spouse, partner or child. It does not include special dependants, such as parents or siblings for whom the member is liable for family care and support.
